GDM and LightDM are already using this approach. It also allows us to
enable Kwallet integration more globally without generating stray PAM
services.
The default configuration of login service includes both options sddm
was setting explicitly.
i based this on the neighboring lightdm-greeters/mini.nix module.
lightdm-mobile-greeter doesn't have a lot of configuration options.
it grabs the default user to login as from lightdm, along with which DE
it should launch. so no further configuration should be needed aside
from enabling `services.xserver.displayManager.lightdm.enable` and
either setting `services.xserver.displayManager.defaultSession` to the
appropriate session or explicitly defining a seat like:
```nix
services.xserver.displayManager.lightdm.extraSeatDefaults = ''
user-session = phosh
'';
```
most of these are hidden because they're either part of a submodule that
doesn't have its type rendered (eg because the submodule type is used in
an either type) or because they are explicitly hidden. some of them are
merely hidden from nix-doc-munge by how their option is put together.
conversions were done using https://github.com/pennae/nix-doc-munge
using (probably) rev f34e145 running
nix-doc-munge nixos/**/*.nix
nix-doc-munge --import nixos/**/*.nix
the tool ensures that only changes that could affect the generated
manual *but don't* are committed, other changes require manual review
and are discarded.
This config is removed when removing[1] fonts.fontconfig.hinting.style
option.
However, when adding[2] that option back, this config is missing.

Other popular distros (OpenSuse, Ubuntu, Gentoo, Arch) read $HOME/.profile when starting X11 display managers.
When moving to nixOS, that is then broken leading to unpredictable behavior (probably programs not working).
This adds similar behavior to https://github.com/sddm/sddm/blob/develop/data/scripts/Xsession

the conversion procedure is simple:
- find all things that look like options, ie calls to either `mkOption`
or `lib.mkOption` that take an attrset. remember the attrset as the
option
- for all options, find a `description` attribute who's value is not a
call to `mdDoc` or `lib.mdDoc`
- textually convert the entire value of the attribute to MD with a few
simple regexes (the set from mdize-module.sh)
- if the change produced a change in the manual output, discard
- if the change kept the manual unchanged, add some text to the
description to make sure we've actually found an option. if the
manual changes this time, keep the converted description
this procedure converts 80% of nixos options to markdown. around 2000
options remain to be inspected, but most of those fail the "does not
change the manual output check": currently the MD conversion process
does not faithfully convert docbook tags like <code> and <package>, so
any option using such tags will not be converted at all.
Recent `wrapGAppsHook` change stops `adwaita-icon-theme` from being added to `XDG_DATA_DIRS`:
b1e73fa2e0
Since `display-manager.service` does not have `/run/current-system/sw/share` in `XDG_DATA_DIRS`, it does not pick up the globally installed icon theme either, preventing icons from showing.
Let’s make Adwaita available to fix that for now.
Fixes: https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/171692
GNOME Shell 42 switched an icon for the accessibility menu in the top panel
to one from gnome-control-center instead of a legacy one from adwaita-icon-theme:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/merge_requests/2155
Let’s add that dependency to the systemd unit since installing it
through `environment.systemPackages` is not enough due to environment isolation.
For now at least. I expect someone will find a working type later.
It's incorrect and was causing bad issues. Example test case:
nix-instantiate nixos/release.nix -A tests.xfce.x86_64-linux --dry-run
This is a partial revert of commit b2d803c from PR #162271.
Required as visible in the lightdm tests:
> Error updating user /org/freedesktop/Accounts/User1001: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.Accounts.Error.PermissionDenied: Not authorized: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1 was not provided by any .service files
some options have default that are best described in prose, such as
defaults that depend on the system stateVersion, defaults that are
derivations specific to the surrounding context, or those where the
expression is much longer and harder to understand than a simple text
snippet.
Recommend to use services.xserver.dpi option instead. Mention in the
documentation that it's a sledgehammer approach and monitor settings should be
used instead.
Also don't set DPI in fontconfig settings; fontconfig should use Xft settings
by default so let's not override one value in multiple places. For example,
user now can set DPI via ~/.Xresources properly.
See https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/73095
It looks like it can finally be removed: the `Failed to open gpu
'/dev/dri/card0'` error is gone and the nixosTests.gnome test is
passing (checked 4 times in a row).
GDM 40.1 switched from storing X11 sessions in the "XSession" property
on AccountService to "Session" with a "x11" "SessionType".
For compatibility reasons, we should set both, since AccountService
doesn't seem to provide the compatibility for us.
(It was requested by them.)
I left one case due to fetching from their personal repo:
pkgs/desktops/pantheon/desktop/extra-elementary-contracts/default.nix
Instead of treating the sddm config a wall of text that doesn't allow us
to override anything, turn it into an attribute set.
We dump `extraConfig` and instead introduce `settings` that is merged
with the module defaults to provide the final configuration.
There is some additional noise in here due to nixpkgs-fmt.
This partially reverts bf3d3dd19b.
I don't know why we weren't getting a default logfile back then but Xorg
definitely provides one now ($XDG_DATA_HOME for regular users and /var/log for
root, see `man Xorg`)
Currently lxqt is a desktop environment that's compiled against qt514.
To avoid possible issues (#101369), we (hopefully) use the same qt
version as the desktop environment at hand. LXQT should move to qt515,
and for the long term the correct qt version should be inherited by the
sddm module.
In https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issues/100119 pantheon's greeter
has g-s-d running which allows brightness controls via pkexec.
This is changed in newer versions of g-s-d (pantheon uses a fork currently),
but whenever brightness is changed with a shell of `shadow` we get
```
Oct 10 23:51:44 kirXps pkexec[18722]: lightdm: Executing command [USER=root] [TTY=unknown] [CWD=/var/lib/lightdm] [COMMAND=/run/current-system/sw/bin/elementary-settings-daemon/gsd-backlight-helper /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-eDP-1/intel_backlight 65587]
```
I'm not sure this should be strictly needed, so we should try to
revert later on when pantheon's g-s-d is updated.
To avoid extra flickering on boot, we want GDM to tell Plymouth to
quit after GDM takes control of the display. That configuration was
reverted in #71065 because it caused ‘nixos-rebuild switch’ to bring
down the graphical session. The reason was that if multi-user.target
wants plymouth-quit.service which conflicts display-manager.service,
then when ‘nixos-rebuild switch’ starts multi-user.target,
display-manager.service is stopped so plymouth-quit.service can be
started. We avoid this problem by removing WantedBy:
multi-user.target from plymouth-quit.service.

This reverts commit 3cd2b59b8c.
It created infinite recursion when using LXQt, since lxqt module
uses `config.system.path` in `services.xserver.desktopManager.session`.
`config.system.path` is a `buildEnv` that depends on `environment.systemPackages`.
This removes the `services.dbus.socketActivated` and
`services.xserver.startDbusSession` options. Instead the user D-Bus
session is always socket activated.
