Allow building a systemd initrd with a kernel that does not have
modules support enabled (`CONFIG_MODULES=n`), by removing the
assertion and only include the modulesClosure, kmod and support files
if MODULES is enabled or unset in the kernel.
PR #431115 changed extraStructuredConfig to structuredExtraConfig to
follow the deprecation warning about `extraConfig`. However,
`extraStructuredConfig` was mentioned in several places in the docs that
weren't addressed. Also, using this would silently fail since the code
in question would still accept the old key.
This patch updates the docs accordingly and throws an error if the
code-path is reached and `extraStructuredConfig` is being used.
Thank you for making this change.
Unfortunately, and I take blame for this, this change to the module
system was not reviewed and approved by the module system maintainers.
I'm supportive of this change, but extending it on the staging-next
branch is not the right place.
This commit is also here to make sure that we don't run into conflicts
or other git trouble with the staging workflow.
Review:
It looks alright, but it didn't have tests yet, and it should be
considered in a broader context where the existence of this type
creates an incentive to be used in cases where the `<attr> = false;`
case is undesirable. I'd like to complement this with an type that
has `<attr> = {};` only.
My apologies for the lack of a timely and clear review. Often we
recommend to define the type outside the module system until
approved. This commit puts us back in that state.

Format all Nix files using the officially approved formatter,
making the CI check introduced in the previous commit succeed:
nix-build ci -A fmt.check
This is the next step of the of the [implementation](https://github.com/NixOS/nixfmt/issues/153)
of the accepted [RFC 166](https://github.com/NixOS/rfcs/pull/166).
This commit will lead to merge conflicts for a number of PRs,
up to an estimated ~1100 (~33%) among the PRs with activity in the past 2
months, but that should be lower than what it would be without the previous
[partial treewide format](https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/322537).
Merge conflicts caused by this commit can now automatically be resolved while rebasing using the
[auto-rebase script](8616af08d9/maintainers/scripts/auto-rebase).

Since lib.mdDoc is already defined as just id, this commit is a no-op as
far as Nix (and the built manual) is concerned.
Before there was a kernel modules path named kernel-modules which then got turned
into linux-X.X.XX-modules-shrunk. Now the unshrunk package is called linux-X.X.XX-modules
and gets turned into X.X.XX-modules-shrunk.
It hasn't expected the prefix for a long time (possibly ever). Other
documentation and patches within nixpkgs itself (such as the crashdump
module) do not have the prefix.
This avoids creating a build-time reference on `boot.kernelParams` if
the configuration does not use a kernel, i.e., `boot.kernel.enable` is
set to `false`.
Yes I know it's dirty to link the rendered HTML, but linking
`#sec-kernel-config` breaks the manual build for me with the following
error:

This is something that should probably be fixed, but for the current
change I'd argue that this is good enough (in fact even the
`nix.settings`-option uses that hack).

the tool ensures that only changes that could affect the generated
manual *but don't* are committed, other changes require manual review
and are discarded.
the conversion procedure is simple:
- find all things that look like options, ie calls to either `mkOption`
or `lib.mkOption` that take an attrset. remember the attrset as the
option
- for all options, find a `description` attribute who's value is not a
call to `mdDoc` or `lib.mdDoc`
- textually convert the entire value of the attribute to MD with a few
simple regexes (the set from mdize-module.sh)
- if the change produced a change in the manual output, discard
- if the change kept the manual unchanged, add some text to the
description to make sure we've actually found an option. if the
manual changes this time, keep the converted description
this procedure converts 80% of nixos options to markdown. around 2000
options remain to be inspected, but most of those fail the "does not
change the manual output check": currently the MD conversion process
does not faithfully convert docbook tags like <code> and <package>, so
any option using such tags will not be converted at all.
These two packages don't have a lib/firmware directory, so putting
them in hardware.firmware has no effect. This will become a hard
error once firmware compression is implemented.
(In the case of Linux, the firmware was all moved to linux-firmware.)
Checks whether all spaces are inside double quotes, thus ensuring that one
string parses as no more than one kernel param.

Previously the code took the kernelPatches of the final derivation, which
might or might not be what was passed to the derivation in the original call.
The previous behaviour caused various hacks to become neccessary to avoid duplicates in kernelPatches.
Originally, changes to the kernel don't propagate to the other
derivation within the same package set. This commit allows for the
changes in the kernel to be propagated.
A distinct example is setting `boot.kernel.randstructSeed` to a non-zero
length string which would result in building 2 kernels, one with the
correct seed and the other with the zero length seed. Then, when using
an out-of-tree kernel driver, it would be built with the zero length
seed which differs from the non-zero length seed used to boot,
contradicting the purpose of the `boot.kernel.randstructSeed`.
